While in Richmond on other business, we stopped at the Continental Shopping Center on Cambie Road, and grabbed a little lunch at Yuu.
Yuu is an izakaya style restaurant with a seeming endless menu of sharing plates, ramen, bento boxes, curry, noodles and donburi.
We decided to start with the spring green salad with house special sesame sauce
This is a salad comprised of lettuce greens, slivered cucumbers, blanched brocolli florets, cherry tomatoes, niblet corn, topped with a sweet miso sesame dressing, and some shavings of dried seaweed. This was a pretty good salad. The greens were crisp and fresh, and the miso dressing was savory and lightly sweet.
Next we had the soy glazed miso chicken meatballs
This is a set of six meatballs of seasoned ground chicken, seared in a pan with a soy miso sauce, and a freshly cracked egg. This exceeded my expectations. I expected the chicken meatballs to be dry but these were tender and moist, savory and rich. The egg added some extra luxuriousness.
Next was the tonkatsu ramen
This is a generous bowl of ramen noodles, in a tonkatsu broth, with some fresh beansprouts, strips of roasted pork belly, half a soft boiled egg, and some fresh niblet corn. It was dressed with some crisp roasted seaweed. This was pretty good. The ramen noodles were delightfully toothsome and slightly chewy. The pork broth was full, and savory, although i found the sliced pork belly a little underwhelming. It needed something, not sure what though.
deep fried king oyster mushrooms with wasabi mayo
These are chunks of king oyster mushrooms that have been battered and deep fried to a tender crisp. They are served with a wasabi mayonnaise dipping sauce, and garnished with finely shredded cabbage and cherry tomato. These were okay. The mushroom pieces were, perhaps, a little too large, and so they didn’t fully cook all the way through. Either that, or the king oyster mushrooms were a little firmer than usual.
The dining roomis quite large, and spacious,
The room is noisy and well lit, but modern and clean.
The servers were prompt and efficient.
