Restaurant review: Corner 29

on

Stemming from the prompting of a relative, we visited a new-ish chinese restaurant, Corner 29, on the corner of East 29th Avenue and Main street in Vancouver. This is not to be confused with Corner 23, which is a Taiwanese restaurant on Cambie Street.

The restaurant is occupying the space that we previously home to “MeetRice Noodle” restaurant.

They serve dimsum and congee at midday, and a conventional cantonese menu during the rest of the day.

On our first visit, we went for dimsum.

We ordered off the dimsum menu, but the servers also brought around some feature dishes including these egg puffs.

These are large puff of choux pastry that have been deep fried to a light crisp on the outside, and dusted with sugar. The inside was still warm, and it was tender and delecate.

hawgow

These are the classic shrimp dumplings in a translucent steamed wheat flour wrapper. These were pretty good. The portion size was pretty generous, and the shrimp filling was well seasoned, tender and properly cooked through. The wrapper was a good thickness.

spring roll filled with shrimp

These are shrimp in a crunchy wheat flour wrapper. These were okay. I thought the filling was good, but I felt the wrapper was a little overcooked; it seemed a little oily.

steamed bean curd wraps

These are steamed pork, shrimp and wood ear mushroom stuffed in a thin tofu skin wrapper. These were pretty good. The taste and seasoning were on pointe, and they were properly cooked through. The sauce was thin and savory.

suimai

No dimsum experience feels complete without the classic steamed pork, shrimp and shiitake mushroom dumplings. These suimai were quite good. They were cooked properly, with the right seasoning, and a good meaty flavor.

I never patronized the previous MeetRice Noodle restaurant that was in this space, but based on the previous photos from Google maps, the restuarant dining room underwent minimal modifications. The interior decor looks the same, but the tables and chairs have been replaced.

We returned serval days later to try their dinner menu offerings

claypot of fried fish and tofu

This is a scorching hot claypot, filled with sauteed fried tofu, and fried battered white fish (cod I think) in a savory brown sauce with some sui choy. I liked this dish quite a bit. The fish was properly cooked, and the sauce was rich and savory.

deep fried crispy oysters

These are fresh oysters, battered and deep fried to a light crisp, seasoned and served. These were good oysters. They had a fresh briny taste, and were properly cooked and well seasoned. The batter was lightly crunchy, but became a little tender as time progressed.

stir fried chicken with cashews and vegetables

This is stir fried chicken with celery, onions, carrots, and crunchy cashews. This was pretty good. The flavors and seasoning were right, and the dish was properly cooked through, although the cashews started to lose their crunch after a while.

Finally came complimentary dessert consisting of sweet green mung bean soup, and almond cookies

At this point, I was pretty full, and didn’t really partake of dessert.

The dining room is fairly bright and spacious, and the decor is understated and functional.

Our server was fairly efficient and attentive.
