Restaurant review: Joe Fortes Seafood & Chophouse

On a wet lazy sunday, we decided to grab some brunch downtown. We abandoned our original plan, and instead went to Joe Fortes on Thurlow st.

It’s been years since I set food inside Joe’s, but it felt like coming home.  Joe’s has been something of a local institution., serving up steaks and seafood since the mid 1980s.

We arrived just before noon, and were seated immediately in one of the last remaining free tables on the main floor.

Since it was the weekend, we each ordered the brunch specials.

Mine came with green salad

This was a wonderfully light crisp salad.  The greens were fresh and dressing was lightly sharp and slightly sweet.

My lunch companion ordered the turkey chorizo eggs benny

So this is a split english muffin, toasted, and topped with sauteed turkey chorizo sausage and a pair of lightly poached eggs. Its topped with mornay sauce instead of hollandaise.  It’s served with crispy country-style fried potatoes, and wedges of watermelon and pineapple.

I had a small taste of the turkey chorizo, it was mild and slightly more spicy than sweet.

I had the pork carnitas eggs benny

This is a split toasted english muffin, topped with slow roasted pulled port, topped with a pair of medium poached eggs, and it was sauced with a chipotle bechamel instead of a hollandaise.  Its served with crispy country fried potatoes and wedges of watermelon and pineapple.  I found the pork to be slightly bland, it could use more seasoning or spices.  The chipotle bechamel helped.  The poached eggs were nicely done.  A n intense orangey yellow, while still runny on the inside, . The potatoes were crisp/lightly crunchy, and properly seasoned.

For dessert we shared a creme brulee

This is a baked custard topped with sugar and bruleed with a small torch to carmelized the sugar.  It was served

The dining space at Joes has been exquisitely well maintained, with it’s San Fransisco decor of stained wood and brass interior.

It’s a huge dining space, split over two floors including a large covered and heated patio on the upper floor.

Our server was wonder. She was cheerful, attentive, and happy to answer all of my questions.  The service was a bit slow, but I’ll give it a pass since it was quite busy on this day.
