On a late summer Saturday, we decided to visit Bella Gelateria and Pizza in Yaletown by the marina. This is the second location for the local gelato virtuoso, James Coleridge. The award-winning gelato master opened his first gelato store in Coal Harbor in 2010, and followed with this elegant marina-side location in Yaletown in 2014.
We arrived just around noon on Saturday, and were seated immediately on the patio. There was a weekend brunch menu available, but we were here for the pizza.
The in house counter features a selection of small batch hand artisan gelato
as well as a pastry display case featured a selection of croissants, biscotti, cannolis , and ice cream sandwiches.
We started with the Insalata Estevia
This is local greens, roasted beets, radishes, goat cheese, strawberries and roasted pecans, drizzled with a reduced balsamic vinegar. This was a good salad. The greens were fresh and crisp. The beets were sweet and tender, and the pecans provided a wonderful crunch. The goat cheese provided some creaminess. I didn’t care for the radish slices (nothing wrong with them, just a personal dislike for red radishes).
Our pizza came shortly after, a Capricciosa pizza
this is a hand tossed and stretched pizza shell, topped with crushed san marzano tomatoes, and topped with thinly sliced proscuitto, artichoke leaves, sliced mushrooms, basil, and fresh fior de latte. It’s baked in a gas fired oven, sliced and served hot of the oven.
This was a terrific pizza. It’s thin and crispy around the edges, but still tender inside, and soft in the center of the pizza. There was some very good “leoparding” on the pizza crust and blistering around the outer crust, indicating it was cooked quickly in a blazing hot oven. Although Bella is probably not certified “Neapolitan”, it’s about as close it gets.
Our server was pleasant and attentive.
The patio seating was bright and airy and warm in the sun. The interior space is clean and elegant.
After finishing lunch, we though “This is a gelato place. We need to get some gelato!”
I went with a waffle cone of stracciatella. This is basically chocolate chip ice cream. Well, for the gelato snobs, it’s not, it’s a vanilla gelato, with shaving of dark chocolate. And it’s very good. As gelato should be, this is smooth and light, and the dark chocolate shavings were bittersweet.
