Takeout review: Raviolino

On a frigid winter night, with a refrigerator bereft of fresh food, I decided to grab some takeout from a local pasta place.

Raviolino is a small cafe style eatery on West Fourth ave, just off MacDonald St (probably seats 30 or so), adjacent to Darby’s Pub.

Everything is made fresh on the premises, and their sauces  and (uncooked) pasta are available for purchase from the coolers at the service counter.

I ordered the spaghetti and meatballs.

This is a large serving of fresh spaghetti, covered in a fresh pomarolla sauce.  It comes with three meat balls, and a generous heap of mozzarella cheese.  It’s all baked in oven until the cheese melts.

Al dente is not the word I would use to describe the doneness here…. it was slightly …. chewier…. than expected.  This is not a bad thing, it was still quite good, just unexpected. The sauce was chunky, rich and delicious.  The meat balls were soft and garlicky and tasted great.

Each pasta dish comes with a choice between a green salad, garlic bread or olives.  I chose the green salad.

The salad was made to order, consisting of shredded carrots, red peppers, crisp romaine lettuce, dressed with olive oil and balsamic vinegar.  It’s a small portion, but it’s pretty good.

The pasta dishes here are quite good, and an excellent value.

The staff (proprietors?) were pleasant and helpful.

The room is bright and clean, and would appear to have been recently renovated.
