Street food review: Cactus Club Cafe concession

On the day of the annual fireworks competition at English Bay, I wandered past to the Cactus Club Cafe on the beach and decided to try the concession stand.

At a glance, the concession menu looks like just about any concession stand menu.  Beef and chicken burgers, veggie burgers and tacos, fries, soft drinks.  But upon closer inspection, it’s not conventional concession stand fare (nor is it conventional pricing).  I chose the fish tacos.  When I placed my order, I was given a buzzer device that would alert me when the order was ready.

This is a pair of soft tacos with battered and lightly deep fried cod, topped with mild salsa, shredded cabbage, and drizzled with tangy sour cream.

It’s also comes with a side of crispy corn tortilla chips, more fresh salsa, and a lime wedge.

These are really terrific fish tacos, some of the best I’ve had in quite some time.  The fish is seasoned just right, the batter is lightly deep fried and crisp to the bite.  The salsa has a little heat, but it offset with the cool tangy sour cream.

This place is a concession stand in name only.  It’s not concession food.   It’s decidedly fast food with a serious gourmet flare (and a price point to match).
